Professor Allen is a prize-winning print journalist with 15 years of reporting experience for both Gannett and Knight-Ridder newspapers.  Before coming to Cal Poly State University in 2001, she taught journalism at Boston University and the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has twice been named “Best Writer” of the year for Gannett Newspaper Company. In addition to teaching all levels of reporting and writing courses at Cal Poly, Professor Allen specializes in media ethics and crime reporting. She is working on a book about how women live inside prison.
