Cal Poly Journalism Students Win CNPA Newspaper Contest Awards

Cal Poly Mustang News staffers won five Campus Excellence in Journalism awards at the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspapers Contest on May 9.

Mustang News took home three first-place plaques, including best feature story, “Eversley's Ascent” written by J.J. Jenkins, a 2014 business administration graduate from Goleta; best editorial comment, “CSU's Derecognition of Christian Club Unfair,” by Aja Frost, an English senior from Redlands; and best website by Mustang News staffers.

The student news organization also received second-place awards for best writing and best sports photo. Jenkins’ article “Shipley’s Shot a Year in the Making” earned a second-place award, and the photo titled “Madness,” earned a second-place finish for Ian Billings, a 2015 theatre arts graduate from El Cerrito.

Mustang News was also a “blue ribbon finalist” in four categories: general excellence, best writing, best sports story, and best spots photo.

About 175 newspapers submitted 4,000 entries to the contest.

The California Newspaper Publishers Association has been working to promote the values of free press and the California newspaper industry since 1888.
