McDonald-Liu grew up in Sacramento and completed her undergraduate studies in Idaho. After college, she moved to Los Angeles to work with small businesses as a digital marketing specialist and later worked at Walt Disney Studios in international marketing.

She returned to school to get her master's degree in mass communications from Brigham Young University and recently completed her doctorate in strategic communications at the University of Florida. She is teaching existing public relations courses and will work with Professor Yan Shan to develop new courses in the public relations track.

McDonald-Liu’s current favorite pastimes include training her new Aussalier puppy, Eleanor, (a cross between a miniature Australian Shepherd and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel), binge-watching her favorite shows like “Community” and “The Good Place,” reading, and “all things nerdy.”
