Robert Logan Bio

Robert A. Logan Ph.D. retired as a member of the senior staff of the U.S. National Library of Medicine in December 2018 and is a professor emeritus at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism.

Logan was a professor, associate dean, and director of the Science Journalism Center at the Missouri School of Journalism until January 2003. He worked at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) within the (U.S.) National Institutes of Health from February 2003-December 2018. Logan was an assistant professor of journalism at Cal Poly-SLO from 1977-1980.

Dr. Logan is the co-author of: Robert A. Logan and Elliot R. Siegel. (2017). Health Literacy: New Directions in Research, Theory, and Practice. (Amsterdam: IOS Press). Currently, Logan and Siegel are writing a second health literacy book for IOS Press.

Dr. Logan has published more than 60 articles in refereed journals and is the first author of four other books including: Social Responsibility in Science News: Four Case Studies (Washington: The Media Institute, 1997) and Environmental Issues for the 1990s: A Handbook for Journalists (Washington: The Media Institute, 1995, 1994, 1993).

Logan is a member of the editorial boards of: Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly; Science Communication; Mass Communication and Society; and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics and frequently reviews for refereed journals in several disciplines.

Dr. Logan's research areas include: health literacy; public understanding of science and medicine; theory and applications of Q methodology; mass communication ethics; and consumer health informatics evaluation.
