Recommended Equipment for Incoming Students

Cal Poly Journalism, with its “mobile digital first” approach to newsgathering technology, recommends a base level set of equipment to all incoming freshmen and transfer students. This suggested list of equipment is common items that a journalism student would use throughout his/her college career at Cal Poly.

COMPUTER/NOTEBOOK/STORAGE:

  • Apple MacBook Pro 15”
    • Core i7 or better
    • 1TB hard drive or better, 7200RPM or Solid State Drive (SSD) at largest capacity available (greater than 500GB)
    • 16GB RAM
    • SDHC Memory Card Reader
    • OS X High Sierra or greater
  • USB 3 Thumb Drive 64GB or greater
  • External Portable Drive 1TB or greater
  • 64GB or larger UHS-I U3 SDHC memory card x2

 

SOFTWARE:

 

CELL PHONE/SMARTPHONE:

  • Apple iPhone X or greater with latest version of iOS. OR
    • ZOOM HandyRecorder for audio recording (free in App Store)
    • Adobe Rush for video editing (part of the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription)
    • Lightning TRRS adapter/dongle such as this one or USB C to TRRS adapter/dongle such as this one, depending on your model iPhone.
  • Android Phone with Oreo operating system or better
    • Samsung Galaxy 8, 8+ or newer, Samsung A50, A70, Samsung Note 8 or newer
    • Voice Recorder (free in Play Store)
    • Adobe Rush for video editing (part of the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription)
    • If your phone does not have a headphone jack/USB C only port, you will need a USB C to TRRS adapter/dongle such as this one.
