Freshman Equipment List

Recommended Equipment for Incoming Freshman

Cal Poly Journalism, with its “mobile digital first” approach to news gathering technology, recommends a base level set of equipment to all incoming freshman. This suggested list of equipment are common items that a journalism student would use throughout their college career at Cal Poly. It is not required for students to purchase their own equipment, but should they choose to.

COMPUTER/NOTEBOOK/STORAGE:

  • Apple MacBook Pro 15”
    • Core i5 or better
    • 1TB hard drive or better, 7500RPM or Solid State Drive (SSD) at largest capacity available (greater than 500GB)
    • 8GB RAM
    • SDHC Memory Card Reader
    • OS X Yosemite or greater
  • USB 3 Thumb Drive 64GB or greater
  • External Portable Drive 1TB or greater
  • 64GB Class 10 or better x2 (HD Video), or 64GB UHS-I U3 SDHC memory card x2 (4K Video)
